The first-ever animated Godzilla film is coming Netflix. Simply titled ‘Godzilla’, the movie will debut on Netflix worldwide later this year following a theatrical release in Japan. More information about regarding the anime’s release is expected to announced at AnimeJapan 2017 on March 26.
Produced by Japanese anime studio Polygon Pictures (‘Knights of Sidonia’), ‘Godzilla’ will be co-directed by Kobun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita (‘Knights of Sidonia’), and written by Gen Urobuchi (Psycho-Pass). The film’s voice cast includes Yuki Kaji (‘Attack on Titan’), Takahiro Sakurai (‘AJIN: Demi-Human’), Tomokazu Sugita (‘Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker’), Junichi Suwabe (‘Prince of Tennis’), Kana Hanazawa (‘BLAME!’) and Mamoru Miyano (‘The Seven Deadly Sins’).
Despite the legendary monster’s 63 years in cinema, this latest iteration marks its first foray into the anime realm and promises to "offer an epic re-imagining of the Godzilla world of the future."
"Working with the best creators such as Toho in bringing Godzilla to Netflix users in over 190 countries marks a major milestone for us," said Greg Peters, President, Netflix Japan.
Godzilla is experiencing quite a resurgence in recent years, with last year’s ‘Shin Godzilla’ taking home the top prize at the Japanese version of the Oscars. Western cinema is also turning to the famed monster with the upcoming sequel, ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’, set to hit theaters in 2019 starring Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga.
