New York City’s Film Forum has announced the feature film NUTS! will have its U.S. theatrical premiere on Wednesday, June 22 and will continue its two-week engagement through to July 5 at Film Forum on Houston St. with six screenings daily. Directed by Penny Lane, the animated, and largely true, story centres on the life of eccentric American medical scheister J.R. Brinkley
In 1917, J.R. Brinkley, a country doctor practicing in Milford, Kansas, begins treating his male patients for impotence by surgically implanting them with goat glands, a treatment that gains so much successful that it inspired Brinkley to raise his own goats to meet an increasing demand. Over the years he builds the country’s 4th most powerful radio station (in order to increase sales for his treatment), runs for governor of Kansas, and amasses a fortune with which he lives in sumptuous splendor.
“Like Our Nixon, my previous feature-length film, Nuts! is structured as classical tragedy with a complicated and deeply hubristic protagonist, rendered with equal parts comedy and pathos,” says Lane.
NUTS! draws from a deep trove of archival materials entwined with animated sequences to provide an in-depth recount of a man who saw himself as a innovative mastermind, but was much closer to a medically inclined Donald Trump.
Written by Thom Stylinski, the film began the festival circuit earlier this year and is released in the USA by Cartuna.
