Legendary animator Bill Plymptom is holding strong on his title as the “King of Indie Animation”, having just released a trailer for his eighth animated feature, ‘Revengeance’,a collaboration with another prolific indie animator, Jim Lujan (Party Warriors).
‘Revengeance’ tells the story of a low-rent bounty hunter who gets the assignment of his career when an ex-biker/ex-wrestler-turned-U.S. Senator hires him to find stolen goods and the woman who stole them. This is the first time Plympton has collaborated with another artist on a feature film, opting to work with Lujan after the two met formally in 2010 when Lujan tagged along with a friend to interview Plympton for the Man vs. Art podcast.
Lujan, a self-taught animator, possesses a body of work that includes over 50 shorts, music videos, spots for Adult Swim, and a feature-length film, each with a distinctive style and point of view. “I tend to do stories about people like ex-boxers, DJs, cult leaders, stoner girls, fake superheroes, and other fringe members of society,” Lujan told Cartoon Brew. “Usually, the strangest characters are the supporting cast in films…in my films, they are the stars.”
Plympton, who celebrated his 70th birthday last month, will serve as producer, director and animator for the project, which is undergoing final touches at Plymptoon Studios in Manhattan. Lujan wrote the script, provided voices, and created character designs and backgrounds that Plympton re-interpreted in his personal style.“The voices were done here and there over the whole production of the film, always evolving,” said Lujan. The film will also feature the voices of Kristina Wong, Lalo Alcaraz and Ken Mora with Dave Foley and Matthew Modine.
According to Producer Wendy Cong Zhao, the studio plans to submit it to the major fall festivals –Toronto, Venice, and Telluride — before a wider festival run. A VOD release, similar to how Plympton’s last feature Cheatin’ was made available on Vimeo on Demand, is likely though unconfirmed at this point.
For those eager to see more of Plympton’s work, his upcoming satirical feature ‘Hitler’s Folly’ is having a premiere screening at NYC’s SVA Theater on June 1 and will be released as a free download atplymptoons.com on June 3.
