Some may look to the cinema’s for Warner Bros. most exciting releases of the year, but for animation fans the biggest news of the year may be a lot closer to home. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing a “timeless classic” onto DVD in June. With such a treasure trove of animation at their disposal, it is hoped that this news will mark the beginning of even more classics making their way to dvd and blu-ray.
These cartoons were “animated the old fashion way, with many hours of hand drawn stills,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Vice President Family & Animation Marketing and Partner Brands, “They don’t make animation like this anymore.”
Just which of their many stunning works has been chosen? None other than a two-disc collectors edition of Filmation’s ‘Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle: Complete Season One’.
This is not the first time Warner Bros. has released a classic onto DVD/Blu-ray, but so far these have only been from their live-action library, including works such as ‘Gone with the Wind’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’, and ‘Casablanca.’ Animation fans have been eagerly awaiting a release fro the company that owns one of the most inspired and influential bursts of cartooning greatness ever made by an animation filmmaker: the output of Tex Avery at MGM between 1942-1955. It now looks as though this waiting has paid off and now an entire new generation will have the chance to enjoy the inspiring lunacy that is Avery’s cartoons.
